Signs for the Reference Desk

Cindy Rosser [Waco-McLennan County (Texas) Library] collected these neat ideas for signs at the reference desk.

"Pay no attention to those other guys, we're the ones with all the answers!”

"IT knows about computers, Reference knows about everything.” (use with caution if you ever want IT to work on your computer again)

For school libraries, “We know the answers to your assignments.”

And if you have a lot of online research databases, “Talk to us and never have to come to the library again.”

SIGNS TO EMULATE

Librarian Woes has a post with five great “NO” signs. They promote cooperation with library rules by using humor.

TWO OTHER GOOD SIGNS

Hunger and Thirst for Knowledge, but please enjoy food and beverages (wherever you designate).

Kindly set your cell phone to manners (vibrate) mode, and, when taking calls, speak quietly.

A GOOD SIGN

Stephen Abram and Michael Stephens point out a great sign at Buckham Memorial Library in Faribault, Minnesota. They’re “trying a new campaign, taking down all of our ‘No’ signs and replacing them with one that explains, ‘We promise not to shush you if you promise to be considerate of your fellow library users.”
